10 Easy Bedroom Refresh Ideas
In need of a bedroom refresh? Here are 10 tips to keep in mind while considering the overall aesthetic and layout.
1. Soothing color palette ~ soft blues, fresh greens and neutral hues always look so gorgeous for bedroom aesthetic and beautifully mimic nature.
2. New bedding ~ a fresh set of fluffy, beautifully-textured bedding always feels so luxurious. Remember to layer when dressing the bed. Add the fluff on top, folded over for that extra special look. Pillows don’t have to break the bank. Repurpose the accent pillows you already have and go on the hunt for new properly-sized covers to fit them. Saving money on the inserts allows more room for splurging on the fabric. Don’t forget this detail because it really does make a huge difference.
3. Change out the headboard ~ it doesn’t have to be a full new bed overhaul. Get a simple bed frame and pair it with either a hanging linen headboard and/or oversized artwork with an abundance of pillows layered below for that extra cozy feel.
4. New bedside tables ~ the height and size should make sense for the bed and room size. Don’t go too petite on the side table if you have a huge bed or it just won’t feel right.
5. New lamps ~ keep in mind the height on these makes a difference for the overall aesthetic and light function. Please don’t forget the correct color temp on the bedroom bulb. If the number is too high, it’ll feel cold and uninviting. A good option for a bedroom is 2700, which is a warm and welcoming light that mimics incandescent bulbs.
6. Updated artwork ~ pull the room together with either eye-catching or beautifully-muted artwork. It’s really all about your personality and overall aesthetic that will dictate this decision. It’s personal. Just remember this is an easy way to make the style feel cohesive and make sense. Simply keep the overall color palette and mood for the room in mind.
7. Create a cozy corner ~ If you have an empty corner just waiting to be filled, this could be a great place for a reading nook. Add a comfy chair next to the bedside table and lamp and you’re ready to lounge.
8. Curated (edited) collections ~ collections can be wonderful! They hold special memories and meanings and can be a great way to express ourselves in our space, but don’t get too carried away. You don’t have to display the entire collection all at once. There’s meaning here. Each item is special and should be treated as such. Display a few items at a time in smaller groupings and change them out every now and then. I guarantee you’ll appreciate these treasures even more in smaller doses because they’ll be on extra special display.
9. Change out window treatments ~ hang the curtains close to the ceiling to draw the eye up, and leave plenty of room on each side of the window for curtain clearance when pulled back. This gives the illusion of a wider window and will make the room feel much larger and taller than it actually is. For a bedroom, I love pairing either a blackout curtain or shade with a translucent linen curtain facing the room. It really is the best of both worlds.
10. Don’t neglect textures ~ wooden finishes and lush luxurious details in velvet and linen can add so much drama to a room and can really set this sacred space apart, making it a retreat you won’t want to leave.
Each and every one of these details can be seen in my client project where the goal was to make the home office and guest room feel cohesive but separate.
The Challenge ~ They are connected spaces with an open pass-through making each room visible from the other.
Wherever the eye lands needed to seem as if it belongs and blends seamlessly. I was able to create a harmonious aesthetic for client and guests alike where each space effortlessly flowed through to the next.
The office desk adds a soft gray wooden texture that I carried through to the guest bedroom for the bookcase finish as well. This is where I edited the client’s beautiful book collection, grouping and layering them in on different shelves and elevations. I then sprinkled in a couple of eye-catching accessories for interest to keep the eye moving around the room.
Above the hanging linen and leather headboard is a beautiful piece of artwork chosen in the overall soothing blue, green and soft gray color palette. The custom moss art, which adorns the office wall, seamlessly connects the two spaces in a natural and unforced ease.
The use of natural artwork instantly elevated the overall space, inspiring a fresh and relaxing environment for both office and guest room alike, all while boasting a gorgeous backdrop for the client’s online meetings.
